In the craziness of the new school year it is important for me not to neglect myself, which I can easily do. I’m not talking about neglecting the everyday must haves – showers, meals, sleep, and of my favorite coffee! I am talking about the extra pampering we do for ourselves like hair masks, facials, going to the nail salon, night out on the town or just having a quiet night at home with a good book and a glass of wine, coffee, or whatever you drink! If we neglect ourselves then we end up fustrated and not meaning to but neglecting the individuals that need us most because we are so worn down. I call it my beginning of school blues. In order for me to fight them off I have to pamper myself – so an easy way for me to accomplish that is by taking a bit of me time a few hours a week to revive myself.
In the next few weeks join me & enjoy these quick and simple DIY at home pampering remedies that will make you feel human again! Please keep in mind that I am in no way a doctor/dermatologist I am simply sharing the knowledge I have learned over the years and what works best for me. If you know or think you are allergic to any of the ingredients below consult your doctor/dermatologist first. You can also test the masks or ingredients on the inner part of your elbow to make sure you are not allergic. Now that we have that out of the way let’s get into the fun stuff!
First item of business is getting our skin back to its summer glow and in my case ready for a harsh Michigan winter. A quick, simple, & very affordable way is by making a Moisturizing Facial Mask with only 3 ingredients that are most likely in your cubbard and fridge right now!
2 tablespoons oatmeal
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey
Start off by removing your makeup of the day assuming you have any on, I love using my Simple make up remover wipes. Next simply mix together the oats, lemon juice (minus the seeds), & honey. Apply to the face and leave on your skin for 15-20 minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry. If the mask has dried take a wash cloth with warm water and remove the mask. Oatmeal is a great antioxidant & anti-inflammatory it soothes irritated skin and absorbs oil. Honey is a great humectant and will hydrate the skin and lock in moisture it also has anitbacterial properties. Lemon is an astringent and great for brightening & diminishing dark marks from acne & skin discoloration. A word of advice, this mask can be a bit messy so make sure you work over your sink or a towel.
A great way to get the rest of your body feeling silky smooth is by running a warm bath and simply adding a 1/2 cup of baking soda – yes you heard/read that correctly BAKING SODA! You can also add some essential oils to the mix like lavender oil – this combo will keep your skin silky smooth & lower your stress level. If you are anything like me you can enjoy a good book or a great magazine article while enjoying your oatmeal mask and baking soda bath!
